Galactic Binaries as Sources of Gravitational Waves

چکیده

I review the expected Galactic sources of gravitational waves, concentrating on the low-frequency domain and summarise the current observational and theoretical knowledge we have. A model for the Galactic population of close binaries, which is tested against the observations is used to predict the expected signal for the future space based gravitational wave detector LISA. With a simple model for the electro-magnetic emission from the same binaries I argue that a fair number of the LISA systems have electro-magnetic counterparts, which can be used to improve in particular the distance and mass measurements of these systems by LISA. Furthermore, LISA will enable us to test some aspects of the theory of binary evolution that are very difficult to asses in different ways. Galactic Binaries as Sources of Gravitational Waves

Detecting an anisotropic gravitational wave background with LISA∗

We address the problem of detecting a stochastic background originated by an anisotropic population of sources, like the galactic binaries, by exploiting the amplitude modulation of the signal as the antenna changes its orientation with respect to fixed stars. This modulation, if observed, could help in discriminating the background generated by galactic binaries from the isotropic gravitationa...

Accurate and efficient gravitational waveforms for certain galactic compact binaries

Stellar-mass compact binaries in eccentric orbits are almost guaranteed sources of gravitational waves for Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. We present a prescription to compute accurate and efficient gravitational-wave polarizations associated with bound compact binaries of arbitrary eccentricity and mass ratio moving in slowly precessing orbits. We compare our approach with those existing i...

Low-Frequency Gravitational Waves from Massive Black Hole Binaries: Predictions for LISA and Pulsar Timing Arrays

The coalescence of massive black hole (BH) binaries due to galaxy mergers provides a primary source of low-frequency gravitational radiation detectable by pulsar timing measurements and by the proposed LISA (Laser Interferometry Space Antenna) observatory. We compute the expected gravitational radiation signal from sources at all redshifts by combining the predicted merger rate of galactic halo...

Detecting Planets around Compact Binaries with Gravitational Wave Detectors in Space

I propose a method to detect planets around compact binaries that are strong sources of gravitational radiation. This approach is to measure gravitational-wave phase modulations induced by the planets, and its prospect is studied with a Fisher matrix analysis. I find that, using the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), planets can be searched for around ∼ 3000 Galactic double white dwarfs...

Sinusoidal Gravitational Waves from the Nuclei of Active Galaxies

It is believed that most quasars and galaxies present two common features: the presence in their core of a supermassive object, and the experience of one or more encounters with other galaxies. In this scenario, it is likely that a substantial fraction of active galactic nuclei harbour a supermassive binary, fueled by an accretion disk. These binaries would certainly be among the strongest sour...
